1393228 2- Methyl-5-nitro-1 -imidazolylethyl hiopseudoureas and related compounds G D SEARLE & CO 27 Sept 1973 [28 Sept 1972] 45224/73 Heading C2C Novel compounds (I) (including salts thereof) where R is H or C 1 to C 7 alkyl, R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> are H or C 1 to C 7 alkyl or R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> are combined to form vinylene, nitrovinylene or trimethylene are made by reacting compounds (II) with compounds (III) where A is H or CH 2 CH 2 X (X is halogen, toluene-sulphonyloxy or methanesulphonyloxy) and Z is H when A is CH 2 CH 2 X or Z is CH 2 CH 2 X when A is H; the nitrovinylene compounds can be prepared by nitrating the corresponding vinylene compounds. 2- (2.Hydroxyethylthio)- -1 -methylimidazole is prepared by interacting 1-methylimidazole-2. thiol and 2-bromoethanol. Pharmaceutical preparations having antimicrobial action contain (I) as active ingredient; administration is orally, locally or parenterally.
