R-S-H (V)
hexadécyle, octadécyle. eicosyle. méthyle-l heptyle. méthyle-l nonyle, méthyle-i undécyle. méthyle-l tridécyle. méthyle-l pentadécyle. méthyle-l heptadécyle. méthyle-l nonadécyle.
Exemple I

The monocondensed compound is first formed, then a mixture of compounds corresponding to general formula (II), but for which the number of glycidol molecules attached may be greater or less than the mean statistical value corresponding to the number of molecules of glycidol used for a mercaptan molecule.
As a result, for a value of n greater than I, a mixture of compounds with different values for n is obtained, in other words having more or less long hydrophilic chains, all the values n being distributed statistically around an average value corresponding to the number of glycidol molecules used for a mercaptan molecule.
The molar proportions of glycidol used depend on the degree of water solubility that it is desired to obtain.
This water solubility increases with increasing n.
It is possible to use as mercaptan of formula R-S-H either commercially available products or products obtained by conventional synthesis methods such as condensation of alkali metal hydrosulphides or of thiourea with the halides of formula
RX (VI)
R having the meaning given in formula (I) and X denotes a halogen, addition of hydrogen sulfide or thioacetic acid to the olefins or their oxides, or else by reduction of the corresponding sulfonic acids.
Alkali metal catalysts can be used as alkali metal hydroxides or alcoholates in molar proportions of 0.5 to 10 O / o and preferably 4 to 8 O / o relative to the mercaptan RSH (V).
The monocondensation product, i.e. glycerol thioether represented by the formula
RS-CH, -CHOH-CH, -OH (IV) in which R has the meaning indicated in formula (I) by addition to the RSH mercaptan preferably in an inert atmosphere, for example in a nitrogen atmosphere, of an equivalent molar of glycidol in the presence of one of the alkaline catalysts mentioned above. at a temperature of 20 to 80 C. The reaction is exothermic and the temperature at which the reaction mixture is maintained is essentially defined by the melting point of the glycerol thioether of formula (IV). The operation is carried out just above this temperature so as to avoid any crystallization during the reaction.
Then heated to a temperature of 1201800 C, and preferably 140-1600 C. temperature at which is added the remainder of glycidol necessary to reach the desired average degree of polymerization n and obtain the mixture of thioethers of formula (II) .
This addition should generally be carried out dropwise with good stirring and can last from a few minutes to several hours, and preferably from 11 hours to 3 hours.
The compound or compounds of formula (I) are then obtained by the process according to the invention by oxidizing the thioether of formula (II) or the mixture of thioethers of formula (II) in a known manner, advantageously by addition of hydrogen peroxide at 30-35% in stoichiometric amount. at a temperature of 20-50o and preferably 30-350 C. optionally in the presence of 0.1 to 10 O; o carboxylic acid having from I to 4 carbon atoms.
Instead of starting from a mercaptan or a mixture of mercaptans of formula (V), the glycerol thioether of formula (II) can be prepared directly by conventional methods, for example by adding the thioglycerol to the α-olefins. in ionic or radicular catalysis, depending on whether it is desired to obtain essentially the branched or linear isomer; by condensation of thioglycerol with olefin oxides in the presence of basic catalysts. by condensation of thioglycerol with the halides RX (VI) in an alkaline medium; by condensation of thioglycerol in an alkaline medium on a tosylate of formula
EMI1.3
or on a mesylate of formula
R-O-SO-CHS (VIII)
In the mercaptans of formula (V) and glycerol thioethers of formula (II) and their mixtures which can be used as starting materials.
R can denote a radical or a mixture of radicals such as octyl, decyl or dodecyl. tetradecyl.
hexadecyl, octadecyl. eicosyle. methyl-1 heptyl. methyl-1 nonyl, methyl-1 undecyl. methyl-1 tridecyl. methyl-1 pentadecyl. methyl-1 heptadecyl. methyl-1 nonadecyl.
2-methyl undecyl, 2-methyl dodecyl, 2-methyl tridecyl, 2-methyl tetradecyl, 2-ethylhexyl, 2-octyl dodecyl. oleyl, linoleyl, linolenyl, hydroxy. 2 dodecyl. 2-hydroxy tridecyl, 2-hydroxy tetradecyl. 2-hydroxy pentadecyl. 2-hydroxyhexadecyl, 2-hydroxyheptadecyl. 2-hydroxy octadecyl, dodecyl benzyl.
The compounds of general formula (I) are in the form of a light yellow paste of more or less hard consistency and their properties vary according to the length and the nature of the lipophilic group and of the polyoxyalkylene chain. They can be used as nonionic surfactants.
Very generally, the water solubility of these compounds is obtained with a relatively small mean degree of polymerization n, even in the presence of electrolytes and at high temperatures. Thus, when R denotes a normal dodecyl radical, with a straight chain, the solubility in water of the compound of formula (I) is obtained for a value of n of between 2 and 2.5.
These compounds are distinguished by good foaming power. Thus, for example, the compounds of formula (I) for which R denotes an alkyl group of 12 to 14 carbon atoms and n has a value of 2 to 3 are particularly remarkable foaming agents, especially for nonionic monosulfoxides usually described as having low foaming. .
The compatibility of these new nonionic surfactants, both with anionic compounds and with cationics, taking into account the fact that they are not aggressive towards the ocular mucous membranes, makes it possible to use them in compositions of shampoos at concentrations of between 1 and 80 O / o and preferably between 3 and 25 O / o.
With lipophilic groups comprising a higher number of carbon atoms, for example 18, it is possible, by varying the nature of this lipophilic group and the parameter n, to obtain compounds of formula (I) which are good thickeners which can be used among others. in hair dye compositions, leveling agents, detergents, peptizers or emulsifiers.
The compatibility of most of the compounds of formula (I) with aqueous solutions of alkali hydroxides, for example with NaOH at 40 O / o, is one of their remarkable properties and allows their use in the textile industry, for example for mercerization.
The polyhydroxylated nonionic compounds obtained by means of the process according to the present invention can also be used to disperse alkaline earth soaps and in particular calcium and magnesium soaps. They can be used in foam baths to avoid the annoying action of alkaline earth soaps.
Per gram of soap to be dispersed, 0.02-i g and preferably 0.1-0.2 g of compounds of formula (I) are used in 100 ml of a 400 ppm solution of calcium chloride.
