Abstract

1342642 Rear wheel suspensions AUDI NSU AUTO UNION AG 19 April 1971 [31 Jan 1970] 20638/71 Heading B7D In a motor vehicle rear wheel suspension assembly, rear wheels 5, 6 are connected by an axle 4 supported on longitudinal swinging arms 3 which are connected to torsion bar springs accommodated in a tube 1 secured to the vehicle body, a bar 7 extends diagonally between the tube 1 and axle 8, and the axle 4 is slit longitudinally and has local stiffening means 8 disposed longitudinally thereof to increase its torsional resistance. The stiffening means 8 may be a member which partly embraces the axle and narrows towards its ends. The member may be arranged in close contact with the axle or be shaped to provide a hollow space 10 between the member and axle as shown in Fig. 2. In Fig. 3, the axle 4 has an inverted U-shaped cross-section in which is welded a stiffening member 12. Stiffening means may be provided both within and on the outside of the axle.
