Abstract
1342578 Swaging; stamping BTR INDUSTRIES Ltd 28 Oct 1971 [19 Nov 1970] 55117/70 Headings B3H and B3Q Swaging apparatus comprises a swaging member 30, Fig. 1, consisting of a plurality of radially-disposed swaging fingers 31, Fig. 7, the inner ends 37 of which define a space for receiving a workpiece, resilient means 32 arranged between adjacent fingers, and compression means 11, 25 to force the fingers inwardly against the action of the resilient means and cause the fingers to effect swaging of the workpiece. The main frame 10 of the apparatus has two triangular end plates 11, 12 spaced apart by rods 14, plate 11 having a generally conical, tapered aperture 16 which accommodates end portions 37 in grooves (17), Fig. 2, not shown. A ram head 19 comprises circular plates 24, 25, the latter provided with an aperture 26 and plate 24 connected to an hydraulically-operated piston 40. The fingers 31 are each bonded to, and held spaced from, the next adjacent swaging finger by blocks 32 of elastomeric material. The outer diameter of the ends 37 of the member 30 is such that the member will just enter the apertures 16, 26 with faces 35 fitting in grooves (17), (27), Fig. 5 (not shown). Thus, movement of the piston towards plate 11 causes the fingers to move inwardly and swage a workpiece, whereas movement towards plate 12 allows the blocks 32 to urge the fingers outwardly to release the workpiece. An end stop 39 serves to limit the movement of the ram head so that the degree of swaging of a workpiece may be both repeatable and adjustable. The member 30 is detachable to allow replacement by a member of different diameter for different size work pieces and the rubber blocks may be replaced by thermoplastic material. In a modification the fingers may be held apart by means of spring elements, e.g. spring blades, each blade having one end attached to a finger and the other end attached to the next adjacent finger.
