Abstract
1341906 Nitrile recovery process MONSANTO CO 18 Oct 1971 [19 Oct 1970] 48377/71 Heading C2C Aliphatic unsaturated nitriles, e.g. acrylonitrile, produced by ammoxidation of olefins, are recovered in a process in which: (a) the effluent from the ammoxidation reactor at an elevated temperature enters a quench column within which a first stream of the nitrile and other organic materials is separated from a second stream of ammonium salts, water, dissolved product nitrile and impurities; (b) the first stream exits the quench column overhead and is processed for recovery and purification of the nitrile; (c) the second stream exits the quench column bottom and is separated into an organic phase and an aqueous phase, and, (d) the aqueous phase is fed to a waste water column at an intermediate point therein in which column the nitrile is removed from the aqueous phase; and in which (e) the organic phase is fed to the bottom of the waste water column.
