Abstract

1492128 Acrylonitrile and methacrylonitrile STANDARD OIL CO 14 Nov 1975 47031/75 Heading C2C Acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile obtained by the reaction of molecular oxygen, ammonia and propylene or isobutylene respectively in the presence of an ammoxidation catalyst, is recovered and purified by: (a) contacting the reactor effluent with a quench liquid at 90‹ F. to 230‹ F.; (b) absorbing the generous quench effluent so produced in water to form a solution and removing most of the by-products and most of the water from this solution, and (c) distilling the crude acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile so produced to obtain a gaseous overhead product stream and a crude bottoms stream, at least a part of this latter stream being recycled for use as at least part of the quench liquid used in step (a).
