1495050 Ammoxidation process STANDARD OIL CO 16 April 1975 15610/75 Heading C2C Acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile is obtained by the ammoxidation of propylene or isobutylene in which: (a) the reactor effluent is directly contacted with a liquid to cool the gases in a quench column; (b) the mixture of nitrile and HCN is distilled in an HCN distillation column to remove the HCN in an overhead stream; (c) the bottoms or a side stream in the HCN distillation column are fed to a decanter where an aqueous layer and an organic layer are formed, and (d) the aqueous layer from the decanter is recycled directly to the quench column.
