Abstract
1,271,200. Recovery of acrylonitrile obtained by ammoxidation. MONSANTO CO. 9 Oct., 1970 [10 Oct., 1969 (2)], No. 48093/70. Heading C2C. Acrylonitrile produced by the ammoxidation of propylene is recovered by (a) introducing the hot off-gas from the ammoxidation reactor into a water-cooling zone, (b) passing the bottom fraction from this cooling zone to an intermediate point in a first distillation zone for the separation of water from light organics while (c) passing the off-gas from the cooling zone to an intermediate point in a gas-absorption zone, into which an absorbing solvent is introduced at a point above that at which the off gas enters, (d) passing the bottom fraction from the absorption zone to a distillation train in which the absorption solvent is separated from the crude acrylonitrile, (e) passing the crude acrylonitrile to a second distillation zone from which acrylonitrile is obtained at a point above the feed point, and (f) passing at least a part of the bottom stream from the second distillation zone to the gasabsorption zone, it being introduced at a level intermediate between the points of introduction of the cooling-zone off-gas and the absorption solvent. At least part of the bottom stream from the second distillation zone may be fed to an intermediate point in the first distillation zone and at least part of the bottom stream in - troduced into the gas absorption zone constitutes at least part of the overhead fraction from the first distillation zone.
