Abstract

1341727 Fault and flaw detectors ELECTRICITY COUNCIL 25 Feb 1972 [25 Feb 1971] 5448/71 Heading G1N Faults and flaws in conductive materials, e.g. corrosion in overhead electrical conductors or unwanted changes in constituents of an electrolyte, are detected using a pair of magnetic circuits 10, 12, each having an air gap 11, 13 for receiving a conductor 14 (or an insulating tube through which electrolyte is pumped), an R.F. generator 17 being provided to supply a pair of coils 15, 16 so coupled that the magnetic fields produced across the air gaps are in antiphase. In Fig. 2 (not shown), a pair of wheels are provided enabling the apparatus to be moved over a conductor. Impedance changes in the coils can be indicated on a meter, compared with a standard to provide a visible or audible alarm, or recorded on a chart recorder. A memory device may be provided which can be reset upon a change of direction of the apparatus over the conductor, by ratchets coupled to the wheels.
