1341349 Transferring wire coils JERVIS B WEBB CO 23 Aug 1972 [24 Aug 1971] 39267/72 Heading B3E [Also in Division B8] A conveyer system for annular wire coils comprises coil carriers each suspended from a load carrying unit of an overhead conveyer, each carrier having a base and a mandrel extending therefrom to project through a coil, and carrier handling apparatus at a processing station operable to detach the carrier from the load carrying unit. In the Fig., each carrier comprises a base 28 and each mandrel consists of three members forming a tapered nose 34 with a transverse aperture 36 for engagement with a hook 24 depending from load supporting tracks 19 which form a loop passing both ends of the coil forming station shown. A shuttle 50 is movable laterally of the conveyer track on rails 52. A first carrier is stopped over the shuttle, and the rails and shuttle raised by jacks 64. Movement of the shuttle to the left disengages the carrier from hook 24, and locates it over a platform 67 which is then raised by jack 68 to insert the mandrel into a ring gathering tub 40, where pre-formed coil rings drop over the mandrel. The shuttle is lowered and returned to the right, the filled carrier is lowered on to it by jack 68, and another empty carrier is also located over it. The shuttle is then raised and moved to the left, engaging the filled carrier on a hook 24, and positioning the empty carrier over platform 67. This cycle is repeated. The filled carriers are then conveyed to a station where the carriers are tilted so that the mandrels are horizontal, and the coils are compacted and banded, see Fig. 4 (not shown).
