A machine for forming a stack of pallets, each loaded with a concrete slab, includes a support for the loaded pallets at one station adjacent a support for a stack of empty pallets at another, the stations being aligned with a pick-up station, overhead pick-up means travelling between the stations and being arranged to deposit an empty pallet on the stack while a slab is being engaged at the pick-up station. The supports comprise each opposed girders 27 moved stepwise on vertical rail members by a chain &c. 50 and a pneumatic &c. motor 55 and one-way clutch 53. The supports for the loaded pallets move in synchronism with but in the opposite direction to those for the empty pallet stack. Suction, magnetic or other pick-up heads 19, 20 are movable vertically on a carriage 15 which travels along horizontal rails between the stations. Conveyers 41, 42 feed in the empty pallet stack and remove the loaded pallet stack respectively, the supports 27 descending beneath their upper surfaces to permit this. As the head 20 is picking up a slab 80 from a moulding unit 2, so the head 19 is depositing a pallet 70 on the loaded pallet stack. As the carriage returns, the head 19 is positioned to pick up another pallet and the head 20 to deposit a slab on the last deposited pallet. Stepwise movement of the supports accompanies the above operations until feelers responsive to a given height of loaded stack, or a programmed control unit cause discharge of the stack and/or replacement of the empty pallets.
