Abstract

1340914 Electro-depositing lead dioxide DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 10 Feb 1972 [12 Feb 1971] 4527/71 Heading C7B [ Also in Division H1] A PbO 2 battery plate material comprises a metal substrate e. g. of Ni and an adhering PbO 2 coating electro-deposited thereon in a state of internal mechanical stress in excess of 5 tons per square inch of cross-sectional area of coating. The PbO 2 may be electro-deposited in a state of stress from a Pb(NO 3 ) 2 solution, e.g. containing stress-increasing organic compounds or having a pH between 3À6 and 4À0 with anodic C.D. between 5 and 100 ASF, or the state of stress may be induced after PbO 2 electro-deposition, e.g. by mechanical deformation, heating to up to 350‹C and allowing to cool, or anodic treatment in a solution of lead acetate and NaNO 3 . The substrate may be degreased then anodically etched at 270 A/m 2 in 30% w/w H 2 SO 4 solution at 50‹C for 15 minutes to increase adhesion of the PbO 2 deposit. During electro-deposition of PbO 2 on the anode substrate, Pb is deposited at the cathode e.g. of carbon; nitric acid produced is neutralized with litharge (PbO) to regenerate Pb(NO 3 ) 2 during recirculation of electrolyte.
