Abstract

1452276 Making lead dioxide electrodes DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 12 Feb 1974 [6 Dec 1972] 56307/72 Heading H1B [Also in Division C7] A PbO 2 battery plate comprises a metal substrate, e.g. Ni, steel or Ti strip, an adherent Ni coating on at least one side of the substrate electrodeposited in a state of internal tensile stress of at least 5 tons/in<SP>2</SP> of the cross-sectional area and predominantly oriented in the [111] plane, and an adherent PbO 2 coating electro-deposited on the Ni coating. A state of internal tensile stress of at least 30 tons/in<SP>2</SP> of cross-sectional area is preferably imparted in the PbO 2 coating by heating the composite plate to up to 350‹C and cooling. Prior to electro-plating with Ni, e.g. in an aqueous bath of NiCl 2 with or without NiSO 4 and containing H 3 BO 3 the substrate may be degreased by C 2 HCl 3 vapour, then hot alkali, and after water rinsing, etched in H 2 SO 4 , first anodically then cathodically. The PbO 2 electrodeposition may be effected in a Pb(NO 3 ) 2 bath using C cathodes. The masked plate may be discharged against a negative Pb plate using aqueous HBF4 electrolyte to examine voltage characteristics.
