Abstract
1339762 Bridges; expansion joint accessories ENVIROMENT SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 19 April 1971 [19 March 1970] 13198/70 Headings E1B and E1G [Also in Division F2] A piston-cylinder unit, for a bridge, which yields to a steady force (e.g. that due to expansion with temperature) but resists and transmits an impulsive force (e.g. that due to vehicles braking on the bridge) comprises a cylinder 1, a piston rod 9 which extends right through the cylinder, a piston 9c, 9d which is a loose fit in the cylinder, and a viscoelastic fluid of the type capable of slow deformation but highly resistant to impulsive stress (bouncing putty). The unit is incorporated in expansion joints 22, 23 connecting cantilevered spans 19, 20, 21 of the bridge which are supported for horizontal movement on columns 16, 17, 18, so that the piston 9c, 9d of each unit is displaced through the fluid by the steady forces due to thermal changes but the impulsive horizontal forces caused by the braking and accelerating of vehicles on the bridge are resisted and transmitted by the fluid across the spans to end buttresses without substantial movement of the piston.
