Abstract
1348710 Support structure for suspension bridges L BARATTA 15 July 1971 33397/71 Heading E1G A suspension bridge includes a support structure comprising at least two parallel, pairs of cables 1, 2 which intersect at least twice and are interconnected between the cross-overs 8 by means 3 which maintain the cables a set distance apart, the cables of each pair being connected to the corresponding cables of the other pairs. Further means 4 interconnect the cables 1, 2 beyond the cross-overs 8 the further means 4 housing means 5 (e.g. a tie rod) pulling the cables together to place them under tension. The means 3 and further means 4 each comprise rods 3a - 3d and 4a - 4d arranged in prismatic cells as shown; the rods 3c, 4c conforming to the curvature of, and having grooves to receive, the cables 1, 2. The rods 3d, 4d support the bridge deck 9 on shock absorbers with expansion joints therebetween and the rods 4a are hollow and house expansible tie rods 5. One or more such support structures of cables 1, 2 may be connected in a horizontal plane between the bridge piers 7.
