Abstract

1339424 Selective printing MARCONI CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [16 May 1970] 23818/70 Heading B6F [Also in Divisions B2 and G1] The direction of a fine jet of liquid, from a nozzle 1, is controlled by a projecting wire 4, along which it travels, by virtue of the coanda effect. When the wire 4 is curved, the direction taken by the jet 2 depends on the liquid supply pressure, since the speed at which the liquid travels determines the point at which it breaks away from the wire. In ink jet writing or recording applications, a stainless steel wire 4 may be anchored in tube 1 and centred in orifice 3 by the flow of ink therearound. A steady hydrodynamic pressure is produced by pump 9 and control 10 is modulated by pulsations of deflectable wall 13, which are produced by the input signal to transducer 14. In other forms, a jet of highly refractive transparent liquid is made to scan over an illuminated text (16, Fig. 4, not shown), and acts as a light pipe to enable photo-sensitive device 20, to respond to the changes in light intensity. A light source 23 and a half-silvered mirror 28 enable a ray of light to scan object 26 (the jet 2 being stopped by transparent screen 24). Light reflected from the object is returned, through the jet 2, to the photo-sensitive device 20.
