Abstract

1338917 Treating castings GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 2 Sept 1971 [21 Dec 1970] 40995/71 Heading B3F A casting having internal defects is heated and subjected to pressure so as to weld together the walls of any cavities within the casting. Alloys of Ni, Co, Fe and Ti may be treated at temperatures within the range 1300-2250‹ F. at pressures up to 30,000 p.s.i. The process is carried out in an autoclave using an inert gas to achieve the necessary pressure. If surface connected voids are to be eliminated, they are first sealed from the atmosphere by coating the surface of the casting, e.g. with electroplated nickel.
