Abstract
1337107 Discharge apparatus CENTRAL ELECTRICITY GENERATING BOARD 11 Nov 1970 [11 Aug 1969] 40131/69 Heading H5H [Also in Division H1] A method of effecting a chemical synthesis or other chemical reaction requiring energy input which can be effected using electron energy includes the steps of forming a discharge between an anode 21 and a cathode 22 in a discharge tube having means 24 between the anode and cathode constricting the discharge so that two different plasmas are produced adjacent to one another with a double sheath 23 at the boundary between the different plasmas, feeding the input material or materials into a reaction zone 25 on the anode side of the double sheath, the discharge conditions being such that electrons in the reaction zone are in a selected energy range appropriate to the required reaction, and withdrawing the resulting products from the plasma in the reaction zone on the anode side of the double sheath. The two plasmas may differ in respect of electron temperature, plasma density, or ion mass. In the apparatus shown ammonia supplied through an inlet tube 26 reacts with energetic electrons in plasma sac 25 and the resulting hydrazine and hydrogen are pumped out through a tube 29.
