Abstract

1337088 Inductive signalling; radio signalling; aerials JAPANESE NATIONAL RAILWAYS and SUMITOMO ELECTRIC INDUSTRIES Ltd 7 June 1971 [12 June 1970] 19247/71 Headings H4A H4L and H4U [Also in Division B7] In an arrangement for controlling a vehicle, e.g. a train, moving over a track, speed and location information is derived from a slotted coaxial cable extending parallel to the track. The slots 3 in the outer conductor 2 of the cable are inclined or include a component which is inclined to the cable axis, the direction of inclination alternating such that adjacent slots are symmetrical about a plane disposed midway between slots and normal to the cable axis. The cable is fed with a signal having a wavelength greater than the spacing S between slots and the pick up coil 8, Fig. 4, on the vehicle has its axis parallel to the magnetic component of the electro-magnetic signals emitted from the slots. The variations in the received signal are demodulated 9 and integrated in unit 11 to provide an indication of distance travelled, or location, and are counted per unit time in unit 110 to provide a speed indication. The signals from units 10 and 11 representing actual speed and location are compared in comparator 13 with desired speed and location signals for the section of track being travelled which are stored in unit 12. Alternatively the received signals can be transmitted to a central control station for processing.
