Abstract

1350852 Vehicle control system GENERAL SIGNAL CORP 15 June 1972 [30 June 1971] 28004/72 Heading B7H [Also in Division G3] In control apparatus for controlling vehicles moving on a path divided into zones, e.g. for controlling air cushion vehicles propelled by a linear induction motor on a guide track divided into blocks, the end of the blocks overlap and speed information is transmitted to the vehicles when in the overlap sections. The block sections A-C are provided at their ends with check-in and check-out receivers 10, 12, respectively, which co-operate with check-in, check-out transmitters 4, 6 mounted on the vehicle V. When, e.g. the check-in receiver 10 of block B is activated by transmitter 4 of a vehicle entering the block, a loop 8 which extends over the overlap between blocks A & B is energized with a speed control signal for the vehicle, determined in accordance with the traffic in advance, until the check-out transmitter 6 on the vehicle activates check-out receiver 12 of block A. The blocks of the guideway are provided with inert coded markers, alternately code I or II, which generate signals on the vehicle from which its speed is determined. On entering a block, a signal is received from loop 8 whereby the vehicle speed determining apparatus is adjusted to the correct code. On the vehicle the speed control signal indicative of required speed limit is applied from receiver 22 to governor 32 and speed regulator 34 which also receive actual speed signals from speed sensor 24. The governor acts to hold off emergency braking so long as the actual speed does not exceed the required speed limit and the speed regulator controls the propulsion system 40 and service brake 35 in accordance with the actual and required speeds. An accelerometer 50 and jerk control 44 are provided for smooth regulation of the propulsion system, the accelerometer also being connected to the emergency brake control to delay emergency braking if the vehicle is decelerating at a proper rate after a speed limit change. A profile generator 33 is also connected to the speed regulator whereby, e.g. on being triggered by a wayside marker 64 in approach to a station a stopping speed profile is provided to the regulator to control the vehicle to a halt.
