Abstract
1336918 Phenol-formaldehyde resins MITSUI TOATSU CHEMICALS Inc 15 Oct 1971 [20 Oct 1970] 48080/71 Heading C3R [Also in Division D2] An aqueous suspension of a phenol-HCHO resin is prepared by dispersing the resin in water in the presence of a dispersing agent comprising an inorganic salt of lignin sulphonic acid, preferably the ammonium, alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt, or a mixture of such salts. An alcohol(s) may be used as an auxiliary dispersing agent(s) such as benzyl alcohol; monohydric aliphatic alcohols having C 5-18 alkyl radicals; polyhydric alcohols having 2-6 hydroxyl groups, and dimers thereof; sucrose; monoalkyl or monoaryl ethers of polyethylene glycol, polyalkylene glycols, polyesters having terminal OH groups; hydroxyl containing fatty oils such as castor oil. The resin is preferably one prepared by condensing a phenol and HCHO in the presence of an acidic catalyst and an organic solvent, adding an aqueous alkaline solution to dissolve the resin, separating the organic solvent and adding an acid to precipitate the resin. The phenol is preferably para-substituted with a C 1-8 alkyl, C 5-18 cycloalkyl, C 6-18 aryl or aralkyl group or halogen. Mixtures of phenols may be used. The particle size of the resin is preferably less than 5 microns in the suspension. The suspension can be dried and pulverized to a fine powder and restored to its original form by the addition of water. Many examples are given. Uses.-Coatings on pressure-sensitive copying paper.
