Transformers. - In a high-reactance transformer, magnetic shunts d inserted between the primary and secondary windings are composed of wires, filings, or the like embedded in cement. The shunts may be in the form of separate reactance pockets, as shown, or in the form of a single ring, cylinder, or shell made to fit the space between the windings. The proportion of cement may be such that the shunt does not become magnetically saturated even under an overload.
