Abstract

1336356 Ink emulsions containing cyclized or chlorinated rubber or an alkyd resin R V BLAIR 22 Sept 1971 44173/71 Headings C3Q and C3R [Also in Division C4] A lithographic or planographic printing ink emulsion comprises (a) an external phase comprising an oil-wettable pigment dispersed in an oily vehicle, which may contain a long flow isophthalic alkyd resin or a chlorinated or cyclized rubber, and (b) an anhydrous non- pigmented internal phase comprising at least two C 2 -C 5 polyhydric alcohols. Examples 1-5, 7 and 8 relate to alkyds. In Example 1 phase (a) consists of a long flow isophthalic alkyd resin, tung oil, carbon black and hydroquinone, and phase (b) glycerine, ethylene glycol, potassium bitartrate, a fungicide, and non-ionic surfactants. In Examples 2-5 a cationic surfactant is used, in Example 7 iron oxide replaces carbon, and in Example 8 an unspecified gloss solvent replaces tung oil and Mg silicate is present in (a). Example 6 relates to a chlorinated rubber latex in oil as phase (a), also containing C black. Phase (b) is similar to Examples 2-5. Examples 9, 10 and 16-25 relate to cyclized rubber. In Example 9 phase (a) consists of cyclized rubber in a paraffin solvent, plus carbon black, and phase (b) glycerine, ethylene glycol, potassium bitartrate, gum tragacanth, and cationic surfactants. In Example 10 phase (a) consists of cyclized rubber in an aliphatic petroleum oil, carbon black and stearic acid, and phase (b) glycerine, ethylene glycol, and a non-ionic surfactant. In Example 16 phase (a) consists of cyclized natural rubber, a natural fossil hydrocarbon resin, aliphatic petroleum oils, carbon black and stearic acid, and phase (b) as in Example 10. Examples 17-25 are modifications of Example 16.. Examples 17-20 replace carbon black by organic pigments. Examples 21-25 use as polyhydric alcohols, mixtures of ethylene glycol with:- (21) propylene glycol; (22) 1, 3-butanediol; (23) 1, 4-butanediol; (24) 1, 5-pentanediol; (25) 2, 2<SP>1</SP>-oxydiethanol.
