Abstract
1336128 Plastics material reinforced with carbon and other fibres TAC CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS Ltd 8 Jan 1971 [10 Nov 1969] 54940/69 Headings C3P and C3R [Also in Division B5] A thermosetting or thermoplastic synthetic plastics material is reinforced by a mixture of fibrous materials, said mixture containing from 5 to 33<SP>1</SP>/ 3 % of its total weight of carbon fibres. The preferred weight percentage range of carbon fibres in the fibre mixture is 5 to 15, and the fibrous reinforcement preferably constitutes 30-70% by weight of the total weight of the material. Preferably the resin is a phenolic resin, e.g. a hot cured phenol formaldehyde resol, base or acid cured phenol formaldehyde, m-cresol formaldehyde or alkyl substituted phenol formaldehyde, but it may also be, for example, polytetrafluoroethylene or a polyester. Preferably the remainder of the fibrous component is asbestos but it may, for example, be glass fibre. The fibrous reinforcement may be laminated, and the material prepared by interlaminating the carbon fibre with layers of the other fibrous component and impregnating with synthetic resin. Other methods of preparation include (i) blending the resin with carbon fibre and other fibrous components, and (ii) premixing resin with the other fibrous component or components and then adding the carbon fibre. The carbon may be in the form of random short fibres, e.g. from # inch to 3 inches in length, or in the form of long fibres. The carbon fibres may be unidirectional or they may be oriented in a random manner. Other components, e.g. bronze powder, may also be present in the mixtures.
