Abstract

1335779 Road vehicles FRIED KRUPP GmbH 12 Sept 1972 [13 Sept 1971] 42355/72 Heading B7H A vehicle drive unit includes a pair of driving wheels 15 and an intermediate ribbed traction roller 11 and means whereby either the wheels 15 or the roller 11 can be selectively engaged with the ground. As described the wheels 15 are mounted on stub axles 13 (Fig. 4) on trailing arms 12 which are mounted on a hollow axle 2 fixed in the vehicle frame 1. Each wheel is driven by a separate hydraulic motor 35 via a pinion and an internal gear ring 36. The roller shell 11 is rotatably mounted by bearings 10 on end discs 4, 5. The roller 11 can be rotated by hydraulic motor 22 via gear train 24, 25, 26, 27. The end discs 4, 5 are eccentrically mounted by bearings 3 on the axle 2 and are rigidly connected by tubes 17 (Fig. 4). The end discs 4, 5 can be rotated by hydraulic motor 18 via gears 19, 20, 21. In the position shown in Fig. 1 the wheels 15 contact the ground and the roller 11 is raised. The end discs 4, 5 can be rotated through 180 degrees by motor 18 so that the roller 11 contacts the ground and the wheels 15 are raised. The motor 18 is supplied with pressure fluid from a pump 32 driven by engine 50 (Fig. 5) the motor 18 being controlled by valve 34. The motors 35, 22 are supplied with pressure fluid from a pump 33 and are arranged so that the motors 35 are connected in parallel (to provide a differential action) and the motor 22 is connected in series with the motors 35. The lines 30, 31 to motor 22 can be short-circuited by valve 42 to stop rotation of the roller 11 when it is raised from the ground. Alternatively the motors 35 can be connected in series.
