Abstract

This steering system is particularly concerned with long vehicles where forward and rear axles need to be driven in opposite senses. Pairs of wheels mounted on half axles are steered at the forward end, using driving cranks and track rods. Additionally, rotation of the central steering arm drives two hydraulic jacks symmetrically disposed on either side of the centre line. These jacks are connected by a closed hydraulic system to a similar pair of jacks which drive the steering crank at the rear of the vehicle. The hydraulic connections are so arranged that the opposite sense of rotation is achieved at the rear.
