Abstract

1333714 Electro-plating with chromium BRITISH NON-FERROUS METALS RESEARCH ASSOCIATION 29 Dec 1970 [29 Dec 1969] 63140/69 Heading C7B Chromium is electro-plated (e.g. on to a steel bearing surface) from an aqueous trivalent chromium sulphate plating bath having a pH of from 1À6 to 3À0 and containing:- chromic ion, ammonium ion at least 1À0M, an aprotic amido buffer at least 1 ml/l, and sulphate ion at least equivalent to the chromic ion, in the absence of added halide ion. An aprotic amido buffer has at least one amido group with no hydrogen atom directly attached to any amido nitrogen atom. The source of chromic ion may be Cr 2 (SO 4 ) 3 . (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 . 24H 2 O. The aprotic buffer may be tetramethyl urea, dimethyl acetamide or dimethyl formamide. The bath may also contain H 3 BO 3 and octan-1-ol. Optional conditions are:- a carbon or platinized Ti anode, separation of anolyte and catholyte by a porous diaphragm continuous filtration of the electrolyte through a submicron filter, air agitation of the bath during plating, a bath temperature of 25-60‹C., a plating current density of 300-5000 A/m<SP>2</SP> and a voltage of 6-20v with a 10cm anode-cathode separation. Details are given of making up and filtering the bath and of electroplating out foreign metal ions at 500 A/m<SP>2</SP> before using the bath for electro-plating with chromium.
