1333231 Mineral mining machines NATIONAL MINE SERVICE CO 20 Oct 1970 [16 March 1970] 49762/70 Heading E1F A mining machine has a cutter drum which may be lengthened by extending its two end sections from its centre section, the adjacent section ends overlapping so that drum-mounted cutters will dislodge material along the whole drum length. Cutter drum 60, Fig. 1, has cutter bits 144 and is rotatably mounted on arms 42, 44 which are movable by jack 52 outwardly from boom members 28, 30 which are pivotable vertically on the machine 10. The drum has centre section 72 and two end sections 74, 78 and 76, 80. Each end section, Fig. 5, is mounted on a shaft 90 which is rotatably supported by ends 82 of arm 42 or 44. Each shaft 90 to slide on associated shaft 128 until gear 96 and is splined on a shaft 128 rigid with section 72. Section walls 108, 118, 120 are angled to provide overlapping section ends. The adjacent walls may not be parallel to one another. The retraction of jack 52 causes each shaft 90 to slide on associated shaft 128 until the section walls 108, 118, 120 abut. Endless cutter chains 162, 164 are movable by the drum to dislodge material in front of arms 42, 44.
