Abstract

1333130 Glass furnace TOKYO SHIBAURA ELECTRIC CO Ltd 29 Dec 1971 [29 Dec 1970 (3)] 60385/71 Heading F4B [Also in Division Cl] A glass-making apparatus comprises; a melting furnace, Fig. 1, having a melting chamber 1 defined by the wall of a cylindrical flue 7, side walls 2 and ceiling 3 and at least one burner 8 for directing fuel, air, and glass raw materials into the melting chamber tangentially of the flue wall; and a purifying furnace, Fig. 3, for removing air bubbles from the glass leaving the melting furnace, the purifying furnace comprising a rotatably mounted cylinder lined with refractory brick 21 and having an inlet end 26 and a glass discharge end 27, and an annular baffle 24, having perforations 25 in its periphery, fixed to the inside wall of the cylinder. Glass, flowing down the inclined wall 10 of the melting furnace enters the purifying furnace at 26 and is subjected to centrifugal force in the rotating cylinder of the purifying furnace. Air bubbles in the glass accordingly move towards the axis of rotation and bubble free glass flows through the perforations 25 and out of the furnace at 27 into a mixer 31 which is rotating more slowly than the cylinder of the purifying furnace and accordingly mixes the glass into a homogeneous mass.
