1332922 Pneumatic conveyers P WESTERBY 20 Oct 1970 49775/70 Heading B8A [Also in Divisions F2 and F4] A duct for a gas or liquid is provided with slits each having one edge more rigid than the other to permit resilient displacement of the less rigid edge so as to vary the outlet cross-section of the slits. Grain 4 is dried as a batch in a chamber 2 provided with the ducts, which are supplied with heated air by a fan 8 and have the slits 13 in their vertical side walls. During drying, the pressure of grain 4 on the duct walls causes inward deflection of the less rigid edges 19, Fig. 4, so as to widen the slits 13 so that large quantities of air can pass. When the grain is dry, the dampers 12 are opened so that the grain near them will run down discharge shoots 9 on to a conveyer 10 (until it reaches its angle of repose 18) so relieving the pressure on the walls and hence narrowing the nearby slits 13 so as to increase the air velocity for promoting discharge of the grain. Alternatively, the slits may be narrow when the ducts are being pressed, and wide during discharge. The one slit edge is made rigid by bending (Fig. 4) or bending to form an angle or back on itself, or by a welded reinforcement.
