Abstract
1332829 Combustible gas SIEMENS AG 22 Dec 1970 [24 Dec 1969] 60975/70 Heading C5E A gaseous or liquid hydrocarbon, e.g. benzene, is reacted with air or oxygen over a Ni or Pt catalyst to produce H 2 and CO which are reacted with water vapour over a catalyst which promotes the conversion of CO to CO 2 , both reactions being conducted on a porous surface, e.g. in sintered bricks which support the catalysts. The preheated reactants traverse a plurality of spaced bricks, having a pore volume of 50 to 65%, through parallel passages in the bricks, water being delivered to the spaces between the downstream bricks which contain the conversion catalyst, e.g. a mixture of Zn, Cu, Cr, Fe or their oxides. The Ni- or Pt-containing brick may be bounded on each side by a catalystfree brick, and the Ni catalyst may incorporate UO 2 or one or more uranium compounds convertible during the reaction to UO 2 . The Ni and Pt catalysts may be introduced into the bricks in the form of aqueous solutions of e.g. Ni acetate, carbonate or formate, or chloroplatinic acid.
