Abstract

1332819 Measuring fluid-flow electrically FESTO MASCHINENFABRIK GOTTLIEB STOLL 16 Dec 1970 [24 Dec 1969] 59796/70 Heading G1N A flow-electrical transducer comprises a fluidflow channel in a support consisting of thermoplastic electrically insulating material i.e. a synthetic polymer or glass, with at least one electric resistance wire, heatable by passage of an electric current through it, traversing the flow channel and having portions embedded in it and passing through the wall of the said flow channel which wire has different diameters at different parts of its length, the part of smallest diameter being arranged in the flow channel and the wire being of larger diameter where it passes through the wall, wire terminals being provided at the exterior of the support for connection to an external circuit. The transducer is made by the steps of: passing heating current through the silver-plated platinum wire 2 to raise it to a temperature in excess of the melting point of the thermoplastic material forming the support tube 1; moving the wire and the support tube together so that the tube wall melts on contact with the wire and resolidifies as the wire is moved towards the centre of the tube; positioning the wire by means of a rod 10 approximately centrally of the tube; removing heating current whilst the wire is tensioned to produce a sag at a part 6 of the wire; removing by electrolysis the plating on the wire inside the tube to reduce its diameter from 100 microns to ten microns. Before the plating is removed a shock current of 6 amps is applied to the wire to evaporate adherent residues from the support tube. End connectors for the wire in the form of gold rings are forced on to the support. In an alternative embodiment Fig.4 the support is boatshaped whereby during incorporation of the wire into the support no material is adhered to the portions of the wire which lie in the flow channel.
