Abstract

1332349 Isomerizing alkylbenzenes ENGELHARD MINERALS & CHEMICALS CORP 23 Nov 1970 [24 Nov 1969] 55679/70 Heading C5E C 8 -C 10 alkylbenzenes having two or more methyl and/or ethyl substituents are isomerized in the presence of H 2 and a catalyst comprising minor amounts of a Pt-group metal and Re and a major amount of a porous solid oxidic support of substantial acidity. Suitable conditions are 650-900‹ F. and 50-500 p.s.i.g. A preferred catalyst comprises 0À2-1 wt. per cent Pt and 0À2-1 wt. per cent Re on a mixture of a porous metal oxide of low acidity, e.g. Al 2 O 3 , and a porous oxide of high acidity such as amorphous SiO 2 -AlO 3 or a crystalline aluminosilicate. The catalyst may also contain a minor amount of halogen and may be sulphided before use. A small amount of ammonia or alkylamine may be added to the alkylbenzene feed. The example describes the isomerization of a xylene mixture to increase the content of p-xylene.
