Abstract

1361719 Disproportionating paraffins ATLANTIC RICHFIELD CO 4 May 1972 20762/72 Heading C5E C 3 -C 7 paraffins are disproportionated to produce isoparaffins containing one more and paraffins of one less carbon atom per molecule by contact in a hydrogen atmosphere at 700- 900‹ F. with an acid catalyst comprising 0À01-5 wt. per cent of a platinum group metal, 1-85 wt. per cent of a crystalline aluminosilicate and at least 10 wt. per cent of a refractory oxide support of elements of Group II to IV. The aluminosilicate should contain less than 0À5 equivalents of alkali metal per gram atom of aluminium, and should have a SiO 2 : Al 2 O 3 mole ratio greater than 2 : 1 and should have pores of diameter 8-15Š. The aluminosilicate may be faujasite and the oxide support may be alumina monohydrate or a mixture of silica-alumina and activated alumina. The feed may contain nparaffins and/or isoparaffins; the examples describe the disproportionation of isobutane. Isomerization results in an equilibrium being set up between branched chain and linear paraffins.
