1331128 Packaging machines H W WALLACE & CO Ltd 10 Aug 1972 [20 Aug 1971] 39170/71 Heading B8C In an apparatus for erecting a tray blank around a group of cans, the blank and the cans are moved either horizontally or vertically upwards through a die which erects the tray walls. As shown, cans 1 roll down plates 2 on to plates 3 which are pivoted at 4 and which in their lower positions align groups of cans 1 with the mouths of two dies, represented by rectangles 6 and 7, and block the supply of further cans 1 from the plates 2. Spaced strips 8 on the plates 3 control the grouping of the cans. Pistons 9 then engage each group of cans 1 and push it horizontally into a tapered rectangular channel. Upon continued horizontal movement, the cans engage the base panel of a tray blank (U.K. patent Specification 1,221,928 referred to) which is held in a slot 11, and then move with the blank through the die which includes members 14 and resiliently mounted pressure wheels 15 to fold the corners of the tray. Each corner of the tray blank has fold lines 26, 27 and a slot 31, and is folded (Figs. 7a-7e) by one of the members 14 and one of the pressure wheels 15 into a dog-eared fold (32, Fig. 7e) which extends inwardly of the tray and is adhered by self-adhesive previously applied to the blank.
