Abstract

1330501 Blind rivets TEXTRON Inc 26 Aug 1970 40958/70 Heading F2H A blind rivet comprises a hollow rivet body having a head 1, shank 2b and tail 2c portions, the head being enlarged relative to the shank, the tail being a continuation of the shank and fast with it at an interface 2a, the head and shank portions being of a metal of relatively high shear and tensile strength, the tail portion being relatively ductile and formable, the rivet also including a pulling stem for extension through the body to effect deformation of the deformable tail to form a driven blind head. The two strengths may be provided by different heat treatments of the same titanium alloy or by different alloys, but the portions are welded together after being given their appropriate strengths. The pulling stem may be of one, two or three metals 11, 11c, 11d with interfaces between the portions, 11a, 11b so that metal of high tensile strength may be used for the pulling portion 7 with a metal of the plug portion 8 being more compatible with that of the rivet. The metal of the intermediate portion 11 is chosen so as to bond more strongly with each of the other metals than they do mutually. As shown, portion 9a shears off after forming the blind head and is retained between the head and plug. Alternatively (Fig. 5, not shown) a leading end of a plug portion 8 forms the blind head. After forming of the blind head the setting tool forces collar 4 to expand the preformed head (this is also retained by the plug 8) and the pulling portion fractures from the plug portion at a weakening groove (Fig. 4, not shown).
