Abstract

1329472 Making honeycomb panels and heat exchangers SOC NOUVELLE RADIAL 23 Dec 1970 [23 Dec 1969] 61025/70 Heading B3A [Also in Division F4] A heat exchanger unit, consisting of an expanded metal body 1 through which a tube 21 passes, is made by connecting together a number of flat strips to make a stack, drilling a hole through the stack, expanding the stack to cellular form (Fig. 1) so that the drilled hole now provides a series of aligned holes, making radial cuts around the holes, and forcing a tube into the holes. The flat strips are connected along selected transverse bands, and then secured together. The drilled hole has a diameter smaller than that of the tube and the aligned holes are enlarged (Fig. 4) by a tool (Fig. 5) which has radial cutting edges and is drawn through the holes. The heat exchange unit may be combined with other units in series or parallel (Fig. 1) or may be used as a space-heating radiator, a heat engine radiator, or in a refrigerator. The unit may be immersed in a metallizing or graphitizing bath during its assembly to improve its efficiency. The bath may contain a drying or non-drying linseed oil, stand oil, a binder such as a synthetic phenol resin, a glycerophthalic epikote resin, a silicone, a chlorinated or isomerized rubber, or a powder such as zinc, aluminium, copper or graphite. The parts of the heat exchanger itself may be formed from copper or aluminium or an alloy based on one of these metals.
