Abstract
1326791 Missiles; launching missiles ENTWICKLUNGSBURO POSEIDON KIEL GmbH 17 Aug 1970 39503/70 Headings F3A and F3C A missile 6, Fig. 1, for firing from a submerged submarine 2 to destroy a pursuing aircraft 3, comprises a target-homing head 10 and a gyroscopic system 5 which, prior to firing the missile, receives an azimuthal bearing on the target obtained by a periscope 1 and, on firing, causes the missile, at a predetermined height 9 above the water, to assume a substantially horizontal trajectory in the azimuthal direction of the target. The missile is finally brought to the target by the head 10 which is activated at a point 11 along the missile trajectory 5. The missile is detonated by a proximity fuze. The azimuthal bearing is transmitted directly to the gyroscopic system by a synchrometer 4 or by the rotation of the missile within a launching tube 13, Fig. 2. The launching tube is provided with a closure 14 and a reticulate firing tube 16 formed with guide surfaces 7 and 18 for the missile. A rotary plate 15 supporting the missile is driven by an electric motor 20 and, prior to firing, is used to turn the missile about its longitudinal axis to a position where the axis about which the missile will turn for horizontal flight is perpendicular to the azimuthal direction.
