Abstract

1326472 Discharging static electricity from webs EASTMAN KODAK CO 18 Jan 1971 [16 Jan 1970 20 Nov 1970] 2252/71 Heading B8R The electrostatic charge on a moving web 11, e.g. of photographic film or paper, is neutralized or controlled to a desired condition by apparatus including a first roller 13 having-an electrically conductive surface for engaging one side of the web and a second roller 15 having a partiallyconductive surface 17 for engaging the other side of the web; one roller, e.g. roller 13 as shown, is earthed, whilst the other roller 15 is connected to a variable D.C. source 19 having adjusters 21, 23 which can be set so that a direct voltage of the correct sign and magnitude is applied to the roller 15, the value of this voltage being determined either empirically or by means of a meter 25, 27. The roller surface 17 has a resistivity of between 1 Î 10<SP>7</SP> and 1 Î 10<SP>12</SP> ohm per square and is preferably constituted by a cotton velour plush sleeve treated with a surfactant material to make it partially conductive, this property of the surface preventing undesirable sparking should the roller 13 contact the roller 15, as may occur if the web should break or run out. Modifications of the apparatus for treating sheets of material cut from a web, and for treating a web with an electrically conductive coating on one side, are described with reference to Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown).
