Abstract

PURPOSE:To decrease electrical damages of a photoreceptor and prolong its life by making the resistance value of a contactor of an electrostatic charger large on the side contacting the body to be electrostatically charged first and small on the opposite side. CONSTITUTION:A contactor 28 and an electrode 29 are mounted on the front part of an electrostatic charger base 24 successively from the front surface thereof, that is, the side in contact with a photoreceptor 4. The contactor 28 is bisected to a front stage 28a and a rear stage 28b in the rotating direction of the photoreceptor 4, and has a regulated resistance value. The electrode 29 is constituted of conductive rubber, to which an AC power source 32 and a DC power source 33 are respectively connected. When AC voltage and DC voltage are applied from the electrode 29 in accordance with the rotation of the photoreceptor 4, the peak of the inflow current to the body to be electrostatically charged decreases because the front stage 28a of the contactor 28 is set larger in contactor resistance than the rear stage 28b. With such constitution, the electrical damages of the photoreceptor as the body to be electrostatically charged are decreased and the life of the photoreceptor is prolonged.
