Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable uniform negative charging using comparatively low voltage, by controlling voltage to be applied to an AC corona discharger so as to increase negative current flowing toward a photoreceptor.
CONSTITUTION: AC voltage is applied to corona discharge wires 10 surrounded with shielding plate 9 of corona charger 2, and the surface of photoreceptor 1 is negatively charged by AC corona discharge. Applying AC voltage to wires 10 of charger 2 produces negative and positive corona discharges alternately, and since negative corona discharge voltage is low, the total current becomes negative. The negative drum current of this total current contributing to charging is controlled by suppressing positive current, such as cutting the peak value of the positive side to a certain value, thus permitting uniform and stable negative charging to be attained.
