Abstract

1326295 Punching-dies INTERNATIONAL COMPUTERS Ltd 17227/71 Heading B3A [Also in Division B4] A punch mechanism for punching data carriers such as cards or tapes comprises a die plate 9 having a number of punch apertures 10, the walls of the apertures being hardened and the remainder of the die plate being relatively soft; a bolster 1 being arranged to support the die plate over substantially the whole of the unperforated area of the die plate. The die plate is made from a steel plate which is flattened, ground and then copper plated. Rectangular apertures 10 are then pierced, shaved and broached, and after degreasing the plate is casehardened, the copper plated surfaces being protected from the intruding process. The copper plating is then removed and the walls of the apertures blasted with glass particles to remove any oxide layers to leave hardened die apertures. The die plate is then secured to the bolster by means of an adhesive strip 6 which after the application of heat and pressure bonds the die to the bolster. The punches, 3 which are of tungsten carbide, are guided in bushes 17, 18 secured in a stripper 12 by a cold-setting adhesive, the stripper and bolster being aligned by dowels 15 and clamped together by screws. A gap 14 is provided in the stripper for the insertion of the data carrier. The bushes are lubricated via a nipple 22 and passages 21.
