830,245. Sheet metal joints; punching; making stator cores. LIMIT ENGINEERING GROUP Ltd., and SONES, W. H. June 16, 1958 [April 24, 1957], No. 13122/57. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). Metal sheets, such as the stator laminations of a dynamo - electric machine, are joined by tongues cut in one sheet and bent out of the plane of the sheet so that they engage within the openings left by the formation of similar tongues in the adjacent sheet. A plate 29 carries two punches 30 and 31 and between the punches a button 35 in contact with a pressure pad 36 which seats on a third punch 37 supported in a guide 38. In operation a strip of metal 47 is fed progressively, forward to include a successive punch with each stroke, the punches respectively punching a hole shaping the tongues and stamping out each sheet. The finished sheets are pressed down through a cavity 34 and between friction faces 43 and 44 which ensure that the tongues 13 of each disc are pressed into the openings of the previous disc. The pad 36 is carried on a lever which is adapted to swing the pad out of contact with the button 35 and punch 37 and is used in conjunction with a counting mechanism so that after a certain number of operations the pad 36 is swung away, this producing a disc 49 without projecting tongues. The pad is swung back into the operative position after one stroke and the disc 49 constitutes a blank between two assemblies. In another form, to eliminate the projection of the tongues of the first disc from each assembly, an additional pressure pad 54 is used to produce a disc 57.
