Abstract

1325685 Neutron generators NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 17 Dec 1970 [23 Dec 1969] 62570/69 Heading G6P [Also in Division H1] A neutron generator embodies a pump for removing free helium gas from the envelope of the generator, the pump being such that, when switched off, it will substantially not absorb hydrogen from the envelope. The generator, which may be as disclosed in Specification 1,088,088 (see Division G6), has an envelope 1 whose interior is in communication with the pump which is a getter-ion pump 8. The latter has mesh cathodes 12, 12<SP>1</SP> the upper of which comprises copper plated on to a stainless steel mesh and the lower of which is a copper mesh. To prevent absorption of hydrogen when the pump is switched off, the cathode meshes are made of metals which have a low affinity for hydrogen; such metals are, in addition to copper, silver and gold. In addition to the use of stainless steel as a support mesh, monel and molybdenum can be used. While the pump is preferably of the triode-type, a diode-type may be used.
