Abstract

1,234,463. Working a metal or metal alloy. STATE OF ISRAEL ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. Aug. 21, 1968 [Feb. 29, 1968], No.40025/68. Heading C7B. A method of working a metal or metal alloy body comprises (a) establishing an electrolytic circuit including an electrolyte with an anode and a cathode immersed therein, in which circuit the electrolyte is HNO 3 and the electrodes are inert to the electrolyte under the operating conditions provided that the cathode is of a different material from the body, (b) introducing the body into the electrolyte in a proximity relationship with the cathode (i.e. so that it either directly physically contacts the cathode or is spaced not more than 10 mms therefrom), (c) flowing unidirectional electric current through the circuit thereby to bring about dissolution of the body only in the zone in proximity relationship with the cathode, (d) maintaining the proximity relationship of the body with the cathode until the desired degree of dissolution is achieved, and then (e) withdrawing the body from the electrolyte. The Fig. shows a body 5 being worked using a cathode 3 and anode 4. More than one cathode may be used. The body and cathode may be gradually moved towards each other. The method may be used in boring, widening bores, cutting or engraving. In cutting or engraving, a pointed cathode may be moved along a predetermined line or a flexible cathode may be wound around the line and be gradually tightened as cutting proceeds. The Examples are of (1) cutting a uranium rod, (2) boring a uranium rod, (3) and (4) cutting and boring a non oxidizable steel pipe, (5) cutting and boring Ni base alloy pipes and (6) boring a uranium rod. Examples 1 to 5 employ a Pt anode and Pt cathode. Example 6 employs a Pt anode and an Al cathode.
