Abstract
1325565 Cellulose acetate films G B DEL CAMPO 9 Sept 1970 [28 April 1970] 43129/70 Heading B5B A process for preparing films or blocks of cellulose in acetate particularly suitable for use in electrophoresis comprises the steps of dissolving cellulose biacetate in a first mixture comprising a major proportion of a watermiscible solvent (e.g. acetone) and a minor proportion of a water-miscible swelling agent (e.g. ethylene glycol monoethylether) for cellulose biacetate, adding to the solution, with stirring, a second mixture containing a major proportion of the swelling agent and a minor proportion of the solvent thereby obtaining a swollen mass of cellulose biacetate, adding to the swollen mass 3 to 10% by weight formamide, casting a film from the resultant mass, evaporating at least a portion of the solvent and immersing the cast film into water to replace the remainder of solvent and swelling agent by the water and obtain a film of cellulose biacetate aqueous gel. All the steps of the process are carried out at room temperature. In an example the ratios of acetone to ethylene glycol monoethyl ether are 3 : 2 for the first mixture and 1 : 5 for the second.
