Abstract

1331580 Cellulose acetate films G B DEL CAMPO 9 Sept 1970 [28 April 1970] 14804/73 Divided out of 1325565 Heading B5B A process for preparing films and blocks of cellulose diacetate suitable for use in electrophoresis comprises dissolving cellulose diacetate in diacetone alcohol at 80‹-90‹ C., allowing the solution to cool to 60‹ C., adding under constant stirring at 60‹ C. a mixture containing a major proportion of a water-miscible swelling agent (e.g. methanol) and a minor proportion of a water-miscible solvent (e.g. diacetone alcohol) to obtain a swollen mass of cellulose diacetate, casting this mass from a spreading box at 60‹ C., conditioning the cast film at a temperature between 20‹ and 25‹ C. in an atmosphere saturated with methanol and water vapour and finally immersing the conditioned film into water to obtain a film of cellulose diacetate aqueous gel. The ratio of swelling agent to solvent in the mixture is preferably 10 : 1. The films produced by this process are packaged in a humid or wet state. The swollen mass may be cast from the spreading box on to a travelling belt for continuous production or between glass plates.
