Abstract
1325532 Ball mills TORRANCE & SONS Ltd 13 Aug 1970 [14 May 1969] 24665/69 Heading B2A A mill comprises a rotor 6, 7 Fig. 1, a vessel V charged with grinding elements 8, and means to hold the vessel stationary during grinding and to release it permitting it to rotate due to the rotation of the rotor. A discharge port 9 is simultaneously opened when the vessel starts to rotate after grinding is complete. The mill may include its own motor 3, starter 4a and gearbox 5 mounted on a telescopic stand 1, 2 or may be coupled up to the motor of a mixer appliance. The vessel V may have a cooling jacket 10. As described, the vessel is resiliently supported on ball bearings 12 and a rubber ring 15. Discharge is via a ring of ports 9 into an annular trough 17. The ports, which are small enough to retain the media, are closed by pads 20 fixed on arms 21 pivoted to the vessel and held in position by a brake band 22 which also holds the vessel stationary. The grinding media may be metal or ceramic #" balls. In a second embodiment, Fig. 3, a rotor disc 7a may have peripheral and/or surface teeth or vanes, or be a spoked ring. Ports 24 are closed by a friction ring 35 when a tube 30 is turned e.g. by a tommy-bar inserted in apertures 36. It is thus moved upwards axially due. to cam tracks 31 at the lower edge of the tube engaging pins 32 projecting from a pad 29 fixed to the mill base 28. The vessel V in both cases tapers upwardly so that elements and material tend to be forced downwards.
