857,205. Grinding and dispersing apparatus; mixing appliances. COATES BROS. & CO. Ltd. Aug.13. 1959 [May 13, 1958], No. 15269/58. Classes 59 and 86 Apparatus comprising a rotor and a stator for grinding and/or dispersing a solid suspended in a liquid incorporates non-driven stirrer means which are adapted to be dragged at a speed intermediate that of the rotor and stator by the suspension, the stirrer means being so arranged that, in the operation of the apparatus, they have no associated bearing surface above the surface of the suspension charged into the apparatus. In the mill shown, which comprises a container 1 having stationary and rotary ball, or roller, tracks. 3, 4 secured respectively to mounts 6, 7, a stirrer rests on the mount 7 and comprises a cylindrical sleeve 8 the upper part of which has radially extending arms 9 provided with spaced downwardly extending fingers 10, 11 and with upwardly extending raked fingers 12. The lower edge of the sleeve 8 is notched at 18 and has raked fingers 13 extending therefrom. Helical wires 14, 15 are attached to the rotary shaft 5 and outer wall of mount 7 respectively. The upper side of mount 7 has fingers 16, 17 secured thereto. The container 1 has an annular cooling or heating jacket 2. A multiplicity of ball races may be provided. The container may be tilted and the rotor may take the form of a turbo-impeller.
