Abstract

1324984 Pipe couplings SEALED MOTOR CONSTRUCTION CO Ltd 2 Oct 1970 [4 July 1969] 33857/69 Heading F2G A manifold for use in small-bore central heating systems comprises an elongated, hollow casting having main input 4 and outlet 5 ports at one end and subsidiary ports 9, 10 in walls extending between the end housing the main ports 4, 5 and the opposite end of the casting. Preferably, baffles 13 are cast within the manifold to reduce the fluid velocity and hence reduce any noise created by it, further noise reduction can be obtained by lining the inside of the manifold which is preferably of metal, with a synthetic plastics material. As shown, two compartments 7, 8 exist within the manifold and these are connected to the ports 4, 5 respectively. The fluid entering via the port 4 is distributed by the subsidiary ports in the upper chamber and the returning fluid re-enters the manifold via the subsidiary ports in the lower chamber 8 and passes out via the port 5. In a modification several such manifolds may be linked in series by means of ports made in the end wall opposite to the main ports 4, 5 and connections between adjacent manifold made. Alternatively several manifolds may be fitted together or cast as one unit in which the main inlet ports are at one end or at alternate ends of the complete structure. The subsidiary ports 9, 10 may be tapped to receive piping leading to other parts of the pipe system, and, as shown, these ports are slightly tapered.
